2006 Media Guide: Paul Haynes is in his second season at Ohio State. A native of Columbus and a graduate of DeSales, is in charge of the Buckeyes’ safeties.
Prior to coming to Ohio State, Haynes spent two years at Michigan State, mentoring the Spartans’ defensive backs. His coaching resume also includes stops at Louisville, Kent State, Northern Iowa and Ferris State on the collegiate level and with the Jacksonville Jaguars on the professional level.
During his two-year stint at Kent State, which is his alma mater, Haynes served as defensive backs coach and assistant head coach.
Haynes walked on at Kent State in the fall of 1987 and went on to play four years of football with the Golden Flashes. As a freshman, he led the team in interceptions. As a sophomore, he led the team in tackles with 116. After missing the 1989 campaign with a knee injury, he started his final two years and wound up his career as the seventh leading tackler in Kent State history with 440 stops. He played for three different head coaches at Kent – Glen Mason, Dick Crum and Pete Cordelli.
Haynes launched his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Bowling Green in 1994. He moved to Ferris State in 1995 as defensive backs coach and remained there for two years. Following the 1996 season, he accepted the position of the running backs coach and defensive backs coach at Northern Iowa. After two seasons in that role, he returned to his alma mater where he spent the 1999 and 2000 campaigns as assistant head coach and secondary coach.
In 2001, Haynes jumped to the professional ranks as quality control coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He returned to the collegiate ranks in 2002 as an assistant to John L. Smith at Louisville. When Smith left for Michigan State, Haynes accompanied him and became the Spartans’ secondary coach.
In the spring of 2005, Haynes eagerly accepted a position to coach with Jim Tressel at Ohio State as the coach of the Buckeyes’ safeties.
Paul and his wife, Danita, have three children: Jordyn, Tarron and Kennedy Rose.
