Recap

Columbus, OH — Like a crazed construction worker, tailback Eddie George bulldozed his way through the Washington defense for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Buckeyes disposed of the 18th-ranked Huskies, 30-20, in a game that was not nearly as close as the final score. Ahead 30-7 entering the fourth quarter, OSU turned the ball over twice in its own territory to set up a pair of Washington TDs. After the last Washington score, the Buckeyes drove from their own 30 to the Washington six, but again turned the ball over just before the game ended. George was brilliant. In becoming the only Ohio State runner to have three 200-yard games in his career, the 6-3, 227-pound senior carried the ball 36 times, 18 of those coming in the first half when he shredded the Husky defense for 149 yards and propelled Ohio State to a 23-7 lead. George’s runs included a 51 yarder and a 12-yard scamper on a fake field goal that was the turning point in the game. Bobby Hoying completed 18 of 26 passes for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns for OSU, a career-high seven of those tosses going to flanker Terry Glenn. The OSU defense was led by linebacker Greg Bellisari with 10 tackles. Outside linebacker Ryan Miller had nine stops and an interception that set up Ohio State’s first score, while strong safety Rob Kelly had eight tackles, forced one fumble and recovered another. Both of the latter led to OSU scores. The Buckeye offense scored five of the six times it ventured inside the Washington red zone and converted 11 of 16 third down possibilities.
