Recap
Columbus, OH — The OSU defense held Purdue to 259 yards in recording its first shutout of the season. The Boilermakers, playing without their starting quarterback and tailback who were out with injuries, threatened only once all day, but were stopped on the OSU two-yard line as time ran out. The Buckeyes’ punt return team set the tone early by blocking three punts (two were blocked and the punter was tackled with the ball for a 15-yard loss on the other). Quarterback Bobby Hoying and flanker Terry Glenn each etched their names into the record book. Hoying, who completed 20 of 29 passes and moved into first place nationally in passing efficiency as a result of the effort, threw three touchdown passes to tie his own school single-season mark of 19. Glenn caught two of those scoring aerials, giving him a school record of 12 for the year. Hoying finished with 276 yards passing to become the first OSU signal caller to top the 200-yard mark six times in one season. Tailback Eddie George recorded his sixth straight 100-yard game before exiting early in the fourth quarter. True freshman Antoine Winfield made his first start, filling in for injured cornerback Shawn Springs, and had a team-high 11 tackles, including nine solos. It was his open-field tackle of Purdue quarterback John Reeves that ended the game. OSU recorded 13 tackles for loss, one shy of the school record.
