Columbus, OH — In a battle of top five teams, No. 3 Ohio State thoroughly dominated No. 4 Penn State. It was OSU’s third win over Penn State in the last four years.
The Buckeyes amassed 565 yards in total offense and ran 89 offensive plays. Penn State, meanwhile, finished with 211 total yards. The Nittany Lions, who entered the game averaging 230 yards on the ground, finished with just 68 against the Buckeyes. They had even more trouble throwing the ball, completing just 17 of 37 passes.
Safety Damon Moore paced the aggressive Buckeye defense with 11 tackles. The Buckeyes had nine tackles for loss and four sacks and allowed the Nittany Lions to convert just three of 16 third-down possibilities.
Penn State did not cross midfield until the third quarter. The Nittany Lions’ lone score came with just over six minutes to play.
The Buckeye offense failed to score on its first possession for the first time all year. But OSU scored the next four times it had the ball for a 24-0 lead at halftime. The stats told the story at intermission. OSU with 328 yards and Penn State with 74.
Ohio State rushed for 350 yards, with tailback Pepe Pearson accounting for 141 of those yards, as well as a touchdown. Joe Montgomery came off the bench to add 84 yards on nine carries and Jermon Jackson had 54 on eight.
Buckeye quarterbacks Stanley Jackson and Joe Germaine combined for 215 yards and four touchdowns as senior wide outs Dimitrious Stanley hauled in five receptions and two scores.
The win marked the first time since 1980 that any collegiate team had recorded back-to-back wins over a pair of top five teams.
