Recap
State College, PA — Curt Enis ran 26 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 10:31 left and finished with 211 yards as second-ranked Penn State rallied from a 10-point deficit for a 31-27 victory over seventh-ranked Ohio State in a Big Ten Conference thriller. Enis, who entered the game with no fourth quarter carries this season, carried 23 times, but no rush was bigger than his touchdown. He burst through the right side of the line and snaked past a couple of defenders into the end zone. The score came just five minutes after Aaron Harris’ broken tackle, 51-yard touchdown run had given PSU new life after falling behind 27-17.
Joe Germaine played valiantly, posting a career day off the bench for Ohio State. Germaine was 29-of-43 for 378 yards and a pair of touchdowns with two interceptions. In the process, Germaine recorded the second best passing yardage day in Ohio State annals. He entered the game with one second left in the first quarter and completed 12 of 16 passes for 153 yards by halftime. Behind Germaine, Ohio State finished with a school record 459 yards passing, breaking the previous mark of 458 yards set against Florida State in 1981. Receivers David Boston and Dee Miller were spectacular, combining for 22 receptions, 302 yards and two touchdowns.
NOTES: Beaver Stadium was rockin’ to the tune of a record crowd of 97,282 fans.
Run-stopping linebacker Kevin Johnson suffered a sprained ankle late in the first quarter and – except for a brief appearance in the fourth quarter – sat out the remainder of the game.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for OSU and ended a modest streak of two straight wins over ranked teams (No. 2 Arizona State in last year’s Rose Bowl and No. 8 Iowa two weeks ago).
Sophomore wide receiver David Boston set an Ohio State single-game record with 14 receptions (for 153 yards and one TD). The old mark of 13 was shared by Boston (vs. Indiana in 1996) and Gary Williams (vs. Florida State in 1981).
