Recap
Bloomington, IN — No. 1-ranked Ohio State went over 500 yards in total offense and the defense neutralized Indiana to a season-low 77 yards rushing in OSU’s 38-7 win in front of 53,029 at Memorial Stadium.
David Boston gave OSU an early 7-0 lead with a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown with 8:33 remaining in the first quarter. With 5:18 remaining in the quarter, OSU’s Na’il Diggs forced IU quarterback Antwaan Randle El into a fumble. Gary Berry recovered the loose ball at the OSU 32-yard line and returned it to the OSU 35. Just four plays later, Michael Wiley scampered from 2 yards out to increase the OSU lead 14-0. In the second quarter, the Buckeyes put together their most impressive of the afternoon. Starting with the ball at its own 25-yard line, OSU marched down the field on an 11-play, 75-yard drive which resulted in a Joe Germaine to John Lumpkin 6-yard touchdown reception. On the touchdown play, Germaine and tailback Joe Montgomery executed a beautiful play-action fake to freeze the IU defense and open up the middle for a wide-open Lumpkin.
The Hoosiers struck just before halftime. With just eight seconds remaining in the half, Randle El found Levron Williams in the back of the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown play. OSU went into the half with a 21-7 lead.
In the second half, OSU scored 17 unanswered points. On their first possession of the half, the Buckeyes put together an eight-play, 69-yard drive which resulted in a 3-yard touchdown reception by Boston from Germaine. The OSU defense limited the IU offense to just 39 yards of total offense in the third quarter. With 11:46 remaining in the final stanza, Dan Stultz added a 21-yard field goal to increase the OSU lead to 31-7. On OSU’s next possession, Germaine hit Boston on a 2-yard touchdown reception to bring the score to 38-7.
Defensively, OSU was paced by Antoine Winfield, Andy Katzenmoyer and Jerry Rudzinski. Winfield led OSU with seven unassisted and 10 total tackles. Katzenmoyer and Rudzinski harassed the IU backfield with three tackles-for-loss each. Katzenmoyer added his first quarterback sack of the season.
NOTES: For the third time in their careers, OSU wide receivers David Boston and Dee Miller each went over the 100-yard receiving plateau in the same game. Miller finished with a career-high 11 catches for 159 yards, his fifth career 100-yard game. Boston increased his OSU career record to 10 100-yard games after his nine-catch, 110-yard afternoon.
Ohio State’s 551-yards of total offense marked the seventh-time this season OSU had eclipsed the 500-yard plateau.
Ohio State and Indiana met for the 66th time. OSU now holds a commanding 59-12-5 advantage in the series. The Buckeyes now have a string of eight consecutive wins over Indiana, dating back to a 27-all tie in 1990 in Bloomington. Cooper’s Buckeye’s are 9-1-1 vs. IU. Ohio State has won 20 of the 23 games played in Bloomington with one tie.
Joe Germaine recorded his fourth consecutive 300-yard passing game, fifth of the season and sixth of his career – all school records.
