Columbus, OH — Joe Germaine threw three touchdown passes and Pepe Pearson ran for two scores as ninth-ranked Ohio State scored 42 unanswered points to handle Northwestern, 49-6, in a battle of the past two Rose Bowl participants from the Big Ten Conference. This was the first meeting between the schools since the 1994 season. The Wildcats, who were limited to a pair of first-half field goals by Brian Gowins, suffered their worst loss since a 51-3 setback to Ohio State on October 2nd, 1993. Ohio State pulled away in the third quarter. Pearson slashed off tackle on the right side from six yards to push the lead to 21-6 just over four minutes into the third quarter. Germaine hooked up with Dee Miller for the second time in the game nine minutes later to extend the lead to 28-6. Germaine then found David Boston on a 35-yard pass play to close the third quarter. The Buckeyes would rack up 563 yards of total offense. Germaine completed 8-of-12 passes for 177 yards and Stanley Jackson added eight completions for 89 yards. Miller had five receptions for 96 yards and two scores while tailback Michael Wiley had 73 yards on 15 carries.

NOTES: In the decisive third quarter, Ohio State racked up three touchdowns and 169 total yards of offense. The defense did its part by limiting the Northwestern offense to three total yards.

Northwestern receivers Brian Musso was held to one reception for nine yards and Toussaint Watterman to two receptions for 20 yards by the Buckeye defense. The two entered the game with a combined 57 catches for 812 yards and five touchdowns.

Junior flanker Dee Miller’s two touchdown performance was the first multiple touchdown game of his career.

The Ohio State defense has now not given up a touchdown in its last eight quarters.

Freshman defensive end Rodney Bailey recorded his first career sack in the fourth quarter.

Senior tight end Tommy Hoying recorded his first career reception, a 29-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter.

Freshman flanker Ken-Yon Rambo’s 38-yard touchdown reception was the first score of his career.

Junior quarterback Joe Germaine’s fourth quarter touchdown toss to Tommy Hoying marked the third three-touchdown game of his career.
