Recap
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State and Minnesota began the day undefeated in Big Ten play but the Buckeyes totally dominated the Gophers 33-0 before 89,936 fans in rainy Ohio Stadium.
Minnesota was the league’s top rushing team before the smothering Ohio State defense choked off the Gophers ground game with a mere 127 yards. Minnesota could muster only 62 yards in the air, while the potent Buckeye offense gained 439 total yards.
Two first period touchdowns set the stage for Ohio State’s win. Jaymes Bryant ran for two Buckeye scores while the combination of Jim Karsatos to Cris Carter contributed two passing touchdowns. Matt Frantz kicked a pair of field goals.
Ohio State linebackers Chris Spielman and Scott Leach paced an aggressive, well-prepared Buckeye defense that blunted the Minnesota attack. So effective was Ohio State that Minnesota’s talented Rick Foggie had a minus one yard in 10 carries and was able to complete but four of 15 passes.
