Recap
Columbus, OH — No. 1-ranked Ohio State suffered its first loss of the season, 28-24, to Michigan State.
The Buckeyes came out strong with a 17-3 first quarter lead. Dan Stultz started things off with a 20-yard field goal two minutes and 34 seconds into the contest. Michigan State answered on its next possession with a Paul Edinger 33-yard field goal to tie the score at three. The Buckeyes immediately fired back on their next possession. With 6:25 remaining in the quarter, quarterback Joe Germaine found tight end John Lumpkin streaking down the middle of the field for a 41-yard touchdown. With 2:15 remaining in the quarter, cornerback Antoine Winfield stripped Spartan quarterback Bill Burke of the football and proceeded to recover the loose ball at the MSU 121-yard line. Four plays later, tailback Michael Wiley found the end zone off a 1-yard run with just 39 seconds left in the quarter. Wiley finished the afternoon with 100 yards rushing on the 22 carries, his fifth 100-yard game this season.
Unbelievable for the Buckeyes, the Wiley score turned into the final offensive touchdown of the game for OSU. Michigan State cut into the OSU lead with 13:31 remaining in the second quarter off another Edinger field goal. The 43-yard boot brought MSU to within 17-6. On the next possession, MSU’s Josh Shaw recovered a Germaine fumble at the OSU 28-yard line. Seven plays later, Edinger connected on a 22-yard field goal to send MSU into the locker room down 17-9.
The second half started off well for Ohio State. With 9:51 remaining in the quarter, safety Damon Moore intercepted a Burke pass and returned it for a 73-yard touchdown increasing the OSU lead to 24-9. But the remainder of the contest went in Michigan State’s favor as the Spartans rattled off 19 unanswered points. With 6:02 remaining in the third stanza, Burke found Lavaile Richardson for a 23-yard touchdown reception to cut the OSU lead, 24-15. Just over one minute later, Edinger blasted a 49-yard field goal to put MSU behind by just six points. Forty seconds into the fourth quarter, MSU took the lead for good off a Sedrick Irvin 3-yard touchdown scamper. With 9:26 remaining, Edinger added an insurance field goal to give MSU a 28-24 lead.
The Buckeyes staged a last offensive drive. With 1:39 remaining in the game, OSU drove the ball to the MSU 15-yard line. But four attempts at the end zone resulted in four incompletions and MSU pulled off the upset.
NOTES: Ohio State still leads the all-time series, 20-11, and has won 13 of the last 16 games played since 1975. Cooper’s Buckeyes are 5-2 vs. MSU and, all-time, OSU is 10-7 vs. MSU in Ohio Stadium.
Ohio State’s dynamic duo of David Boston and Dee Miller have caught at least one pass in the last 29 and 24 games, respectively.
Tight end John Lumpkin’s 41-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter marked the third-consecutive game he has scored a TD.
Antoine Winfield’s second quarter forced fumble and recovery were both his first of the season.
