COLUMBUS, Ohio — Michigan ruined Ohio State’s chance to win the Big Ten championship outright and go to the Rose Bowl with a heart-stopping 26-24 win before a record crowd of 90,674 fans in Ohio Stadium.
The Buckeyes were extremely sharp at the onset, scoring two first quarter touchdowns to take a 14-3 lead in the opening quarter. A second Michigan field goal made it 14-6 at halftime.
A strong third quarter led by tailback Jamie Morris, enabled the Wolverines to take a 19-17 lead entering the fourth period. The teams then traded touchdowns and Michigan held on to a 26-24 margin.
Ohio State had a chance to win the game with 1:06 remaining but a 45-yard Buckeye field goal attempt hooked wide left and Michigan ran out the clock.
Cris Carter scored two Buckeye touchdowns and caught seven passes overall. Wolverines quarterback Jim Harbaugh passed for 261 yards and Morris ran for 210. Chris Spielman had a career-high 29 tackles but the Buckeye defense was unable to stop Michigan in the second half.
