Recap
Columbus, OH — Reserve tailback Michael Wiley ran for a pair of scores and the defense of seventh-ranked Ohio State stymied Tavian Banks and No. 8 Iowa in a 23-7 Big Ten Conference victory. Banks, who entered the game averaging a national-best 209 yards per game rushing, was limited to 82 yards on 22 carries as linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer and the defense of Ohio State (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) never allowed the offense of the Hawkeyes (5-1, 2-1) to get going. Katzenmoyer finished with an interception and 11 tackles.
After Dan Stultz got the Buckeyes on the board 1:49 into the second quarter with a 36-yard field goal, Wiley scored on a one-yard run to give the Buckeyes a 10-0 lead. Wiley later ran in from 10 yards out with 3:13 remaining in the game to seal the win. He had 81 yards on 12 carries while Pepe Pearson carried 19 times for 106 yards. David Boston caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Stanley Jackson, who improved to 16-0 as a starter, 4:25 into the third quarter to extend Ohio State’s lead to 16-0. Iowa finally broken through just under three minutes later. Banks was effective running the ball and helped get the Hawkeyes to the OSU 4, where Matt Sherman connected on a scoring pass to tight end Austin Wheatley. Instead of going for two points in an effort to halve the deficit, Iowa decided to kick the extra point and trailed, 16-7. The Ohio State defense never let conversions be an issue. In the fourth quarter, Sherman threw a pass to Tim Dwight in the left flat that the receiver tipped before it was touched by cornerback Antoine Winfield and picked off by the ever-present Katzenmoyer.
NOTES: Andy Katzenmoyer made his offensive debut at fullback. On his first play from scrimmage, he blocked Iowa safety Eric Thigpen enabling Michael Wiley to score for a one-yard touchdown.
Katzenmoyer’s 11 tackles tied a personal career best and earned him Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors as well. He had 11 against Arizona on Sept. 20 and against Michigan in the 1996 season.
Sophomore Percy King’s blocked field goal attempt in the second quarter was the first of his career. It was also the first kick blocked by the Buckeyes since John Lumpkin’s block against Wisconsin last year.
The Buckeye defense stepped up big by limiting Iowa tailback Tavian Banks to just 84 yards on 22 carries. Banks entered the game averaging 208.8 yards rushing and 9.1 yards per carry.
