Columbus, OH — The Buckeyes unleashed a fusillade of offensive weaponry in a brilliant 30 minutes of football and took a 56-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. The stunned Hawkeyes, who entered the game with just one loss and ranked No. 25 nationally, trailed 49-0 early in the second quarter as the Buckeyes scored touchdowns on each of their first six possessions. After amassing 396 yards on just 33 plays (12 yards per play), the entire first team offense sat out the second half. The offensive stars were numerous. Tailback Eddie George ran for 110 yards and a career-high four touchdowns on 15 carries, while Bobby Hoying threw for 273 yards and two scores, both to flanker Terry Glenn. Hoying’s TD passes gave him a school record 21 for the year. Glenn, playing despite a stomach ailment, hauled in three passes for 149 yards and then spent the second half in the OSU training room. The OSU defense held the Hawkeyes to minus yardage on its first three possessions and picked off two first-half interceptions. The first, by linebacker Greg Bellisari, led to a Hoying-to-Glenn 56-yard scoring pass, and the second was returned 60 yards for a touchdown by cornerback Shawn Springs. The OSU defense had 12 tackles for loss on the day, giving the Buckeyes 25 in their last two games. The Buckeyes opened the game with a 55-yard Hoying-to-Glenn bomb. George scored from the three on the next play.
