Recap
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Iowa scored on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Chuck Hartlieb to tight end Marv Cook on fourth-and-23 as time ran out to give the Hawkeyes a 29-27 win over Ohio State in Columbus. It was the third straight loss for OSU (5-4-1, 3-4), and the first win for Iowa (8-3, 5-2) over the Buckeyes since 1983.
Ohio State had taken a 14-3 lead in the second quarter on touchdown passes of 24 and 60 yards from Tom Tupa to Everett Ross. A 50-yard run by Kevin Harmon and two Rob Houghtlin field goals made it 15-14 Iowa at intermission.
Tupa turned a Hawkeye fumble into a scoring drive and a 21-15 lead, covering the last 20 yards on a pass play to freshman tight end Jeff Ellis. Seven plays later, David Hudson scored from a yard away to put Iowa ahead, 22-21 with 9:11 to play.
Carlos Snow then capped a 75-yard drive with a 14-yard run, and a missed two-point conversion left Ohio State on top, 27-22 with 2:45 to go. Starting at their own 46, the Hawkeyes covered 54 yards in 10 plays — despite a sack of Hartlieb and an 11-yard loss on a fumble — to pull out the win on Cook’s touchdown.
