Recap

Columbus, OH — Ohio State improved its record to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play with a dominating performance over Indiana (1-6 overall, 0-4 Big Ten), winning by a 31-0 margin. The Buckeyes first score, an 18-yard Michael Wiley scamper, proved to be all OSU would need. Stanley Jackson was impressive, hitting 13-of-15 passes for 189 yards. But the most impressive part of the game came from the defensive side of the ball. After being humbled by Penn State in its last outing, the defensive unit allowed only 35 yards on 32 carries and 144 yards through the air, with much of this total late in the game. Gary Berry picked off two IU passes and Antoine Winfield continued to impress, leading the Bucks with 10 tackles. Clinton Wayne scored the first touchdown of his career on a 38-yard interception return and Ohio State took a 21-0 lead into the locker room. The second half featured several crowd-please scoring plays. Dan Stultz kicked the longest field goal, 55 yards, by a Buckeye in Ohio Stadium. Tight end Steve Wisniewski closed out the scoring when he caught an eight-yard flip pass from Wiley.

NOTES: With the victory, Head Coach John Cooper moved into second place on the Ohio State all-time victory list, passing Earle Bruce. Cooper’s OSU record moves to 82-30-4.

Senior linebacker Marcel Willis and freshman defensive tackle Joe Brown earned their first career starts.

Freshman Dan Stultz’s 55-yard field goal in the third quarter was the longest by a Buckeye in Ohio Stadium. The blast ties him for second on the Ohio State all-time list with Garry Cairns, who also hit a 55-yarder against Illinois in 1966. Tom Skladany still holds the Buckeye record with a 59-yarder against Illinois in 1983. The longest field goal ever in Ohio Stadium was a 63-yarder by Michigan State’s Morten Anderson in 1981.

The shutout was the first recorded by the Buckeye defense this season. The last OSU shutout was a 48-0 win over Illinois in 1996.

Sophomore tailback Michael Wiley’s eight-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter was the first of his career. He has now completed 3-of-4 passes for 67 yards as a Buckeye.

Sophomore Gary Berry’s two interceptions marks the first multiple interception game of his career. It is the first time this season a Buckeye has recorded two interceptions in a game.

Freshman defensive end Na’il Diggs‘ fourth quarter sack was the first of his career.
