Recap
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Indiana stopped a 31-game winless streak against Ohio State by scoring 21 points in the second half to claim a 31-10 victory in Columbus. The win was the first by the Hoosiers over OSU since a 32-10 decision in 1951.
IU quarterback Dave Schnell led his team to 405 yards in total offense, 205 rushing and 200 passing. Anthony Thompson gained a game-high 126 yards against the Ohio State defense, which entered the game as the Big Ten’s top-ranked unit for points allowed (9.0).
After a 10-10 halftime tie, Indiana (4-1, 2-0) took the lead for good with 3:09 to play in the third quarter on a Tom Polce six-yard run. The four-play touchdown drive was set up by a 40-yard punt return to the OSU 19 by Tony Buford. For the second week in a row, the Buckeyes (3-1, 1-1) failed to score in the second half.
Indiana had jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half, only to see OSU tie the score with 10 points in the second quarter. An 80-yard drive and a 51-yard Matt Frantz field goal as time ran out in the half accounted for the Buckeyes’ scoring for the afternoon.
