Columbus, OH — Behind a school-record four touchdowns by the defense, Ohio State opened the 2000 football campaign with a 43-10 win over Fresno State.
The Buckeye defense forced a total of six turnovers on the day, scoring twice on fumble recoveries and twice on interception returns. OSU also blocked a Fresno State field goal attempt and held the Bulldogs to just 97 yards rushing. Fresno scored its lone TD with five seconds left in the game.
Sophomore safety Mike Doss, senior cornerback David Mitchell and sophomore linebacker Matt Wilhelm all scored touchdowns for the Buckeyes.
Doss gave OSU an early 6-0 lead when he recovered a Fresno State fumble in the end zone. Moments later, Mitchell made it 13-0 by scooping up a fumble and returning it 34 yards to pay dirt. Mitchell also scored on a 51-yard interception return. Wilhelm’s TD came on a 25-yard interception return in the fourth quarter. It was his first career pick.
The OSU offense amassed 389 total yards, including 223 on the ground.
